To answer your question about MSFT and Yahoo…
…integrating 100,000 employees in a post-merger is where the companies would bring in consultants. My guess is that they will probably bring in my old colleagues from Deloitte, since they are the experts in this thing. They will hire about four dozen Deloitte consultants to descend upon Seattle and Sunnyvale, and they will pay them at an average rate of $350/hour/person for many months. The total bill will be in the order of $15 million. The consultants will get filthy rich as a result. Microsoft will hand over the money with a huge smile on their face, as $15 million is a small price to pay relative to their $40 billion investment in Yahoo.
The consultants, having each spent the last five years coordinating mergers of a similar ilk, know exactly what they are doing, and they will position themselves within each and every department of Microsoft and Yahoo, and they will walk them through the next six months of their lives.
Lots of things will still go wrong. But a good amount won’t.
