Facebook’s Create A Page
An interesting application popped up on Facebook recently called Page Manager. This app allows you to create a Facebook profile page for almost anything; place, company, product or celebrity.
It looks like there are a few useful applications for this, other than the narcissistic joy of creating a second profile for yourself and becoming a ‘fan’.

The Proxy
The first use I thought of goes back to the Stephen Fry post where he suggests creating a personal Facebook group for people who weren’t friends, just fans who wanted to keep tabs. That’s what this allows; except it’s more like a profile, but basically exactly the same as a group.
Actually, there are only two real differences I see between the two is that you can add apps to a fan page and not to groups. That said, I can’t seem to get access to newly added apps to edit their settings. This renders them useless.
The second difference, other than the aesthetic, is I’m assuming these pages are public and possibly search engine friendly. This obviously ties in with creating a personal Facebook fan-base.
Products & Advertising
This seems to be the real use for Facebook pages. Everything is tied in nicely to their new advertising venture and what looks like Facebook gearing up for more relevant ads.
Because you can create profiles for products and places, the opportunity for good advertising is obvious. This is echoed by the fact that you can create Facebook ad campaigns straight from this app and track page views.
This being a much more attractive option than Facebook Flyers.
More Groups?
Outside of the advertising uses, Facebook pages look just like groups. Instead of an iPhone group, you now have an iPhone profile page. The trade off seems to be slightly less administrative control; which might be a good thing.
